THIS WEEK ON UNIVERSITY IN FOCUS: IMO STATE UNIVERSITY, OWERRI.

The Imo State University, One of the Numerous State owned Institution in the Federation, was inaugurated in 1981 through law as passed by the Imo state House of Assembly.

Abia state at this time, was still a part of Imo state, and as a result, the Institution has its main campus, at Uturu, presently in Abia state.

At the time of inception, the Institution admitted its first/ pioneer students, of about 392 candidates on the 23rd of october, 1981. The students were admitted into the limited courses which had gained full acreditation from the Nigeria Universitiy Commission(NUC) at that time.

In 1991, the Uturu campus of the Institution was bridged out of the university following the creation of the New Abia State. This former campus went on to become a Whole New Institution, the Abia State University. So it would not be wrong to say that Imo state University is the mother of Abia state University and it probably is the only campus to become a full University in the Country.

The division from its main campus was a major setback for the institution as it made substantial efforts to create new faculties and departments and departments that was lost with the loss ou Uturu in the new Owerri campus, situated at the Centre of the state. Even till date, it has not fully settled in the capital, as the current governor of the state has promised the management of the Institution a new site, location still remains unknown.

Imo state University is currently a fully functional University, with most of its courses, accredited by the Nigerian University Cimmission(NUC).

In 2006/2007, the Institution got a 100% accreditation record after the NUC accreditation exercise with all its courses, gaining accreditation making the university popular among the Nigerian students. The same year, the Institution ranked 1st among Nigerian state Universities and 10th in overall ranking of both federal and state owned Institutions. Those were happy times for both students of the institution and the then state governor, Gov. Achike Udenwa.

The Institution began to experience difficult, 5 years after the Inception of the Imo State Teaching Hospital, in 2009,the tenure, of Gov. Ikedi Ohakim, the Teaching Hospital had Failed to Produce any reasonable services of average acceptable standard, making the Institution a bad destination for Medical practices. Reports made about the institution once among the top ten rated universities in the country disclosed that, the degrading state of their Facilities, laboratories and Infrastructure, the incessant strike and the endless admission scandals has threatened to kill the Institution.
Following the incident, the vice chancellor and the bursar were suspended in a bid to revive the Institution.

The fact that, their professor is the head of ASUU, makes me wonder what they do with their allocated funds and leave the institution to rot. We pray that they would regain their momentum and become a force to reckon once again.
